“If I’m selling to you, I speak your language. If
I’m buying, dann müssen Sie Deutsch sprechen!”
Willi Brandt, the former Chancellor or
Germany, isn’t the only one to recognise the importance of
languages when it comes to trading in international markets.
The CBI says UK businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the
need to move beyond English, and of the huge competitive advantage
that comes with being able to communicate with customers, suppliers
or partners in their own language.
Across the spectrum, language skills go
hand in hand with good business practice. Whether you’re a PA
trying to organise a meeting for your boss in China, or a buyer
trying to get a better deal than your European competitors,
languages are an extremely valuable asset.
