Many students choose to undertake some voluntary work in-between
college and university, and will pick up some vital skills in doing
so. They’ll also have some invaluable experiences. But speaking
another language would be a huge benefit in this situation, in
particular for those going to countries where English is not widely
spoken. You can go to our
gap year
section for more information on this.
The same applies for charity work across
the spectrum. International charities work very closely with
different countries, and can develop much stronger relationships if
they are able to communicate in the same language.
Andrew Thompson, the International HR
Director of Oxfam, had this to say about languages:
"Oxfam works on complex global as well as
local issues, so we are always looking for staff who are able to
communicate accurately and sensitively in this environment.
Practically speaking this often means looking for candidates with
two or more languages.” Oxfam’s experience applies to many other
organisations in this sector, although as can be seen, languages
can come into play even without the international perspective.
